Riddick-ulously Average

I'm new-ish to this movie series. That is, I'm familiar with the character of Riddick, but haven't seen the previous two films. This third part doesn't offer much to newbies in terms of backstory, character, or anything to do with the universe of the films. The beginning was promising. It starts off with Riddick alone on a desert planet, just trying to survive the elements and creatures with nothing. An entertaining setup, until the rest of the cast arrives. From here on out, it becomes a cliched and predictable affair, complete with bad dialogue and uninteresting characters (not to mention sub-par f/x). It's joyless in lack of effort, but not in lampooning ability. Overall, it generates the feeling of a good Sy-Fy channel flick, which is about the equivalent of a severely mediocre theatrical release.
