'All is Lost', Boredom is Found

'All is Lost' tells the most self-contained and simple narrative of any movie this year. The entirety of this film is literally just Robert Redford out at sea. It's a survival piece that is solely focused on the struggle and nothing else. This is also the focus of Redford's performance. It's all we see him do. We never learn a single thing about his character, not even his name. This is partially due to the fact that he speaks no more than two to three brief lines of dialogue total. He loses his boat, then becomes lost at sea. I wish there was more to this film, a reason to care for the character's well being or even a tiny amount of engagement. I was honestly bored more than once. Other ares of the film are solid and well done, but the whole experience left me unfulfilled.
