'That 3 Hour Lesbian French Movie'

'Blue is the Warmest Color' is one of the most acclaimed films of the year, from the artistic crowd, but has gained some small mainstream interest for it's NC-17 rating (as do all films with this rating). Of course, I had to see this. I was curious to see what the acclaimed film had to offer. After seeing it, my general consensus is: it's just some three hour lesbian French movie. A mostly underwhelming experience. The main criticism I have is the running time. Three hours is an unnecessary amount of time to use when telling this particular story. Many scenes felt much too elongated and a good number of them could've been omitted entirely. I'm including the graphic sex scenes in that cannon, as well. They were mostly unimpressive for the fact that they felt pornographic in their presentation. I understand the intent to show passionate intimacy between lovers, but come on! These moments only conveyed repetitive female pleasure from a point-of-view that reminded me of the directing of pornographic material. These points counteracted the terrific work by the two leading actresses. It hampered my investment in their emotional scenes. Some moments were still effective. That is credited to the immensely realistic nature of the entire film. I loved these aspects. I only wish that there didn't have to be so much needless material to sit through in between the honest moments of relationship woes.
