On the 'Edge' of Awesome

The first legitimate surprise of the 2014 summer movie season. I thought 'Edge of Tomorrow' would, at the least, be entertaining because of it's premise. I'm happy to report that it delivers on that expectation and on every other level. The 'repeating' effect that the main character goes through is presented in a way that never once felt boring. He repeats the same day almost hundreds of times, but we only see the best parts. The moments that are shown multiple times play out much differently than expected. All the revisits had a purpose to push the plot forward, because he's using this unwanted gift to find a means to destroy the alien opponent. The action increases tensity with each alteration. It's sort of like a video-game, in that he remembers his steps from the previous day and progresses further each time, but it feels like a true cinematic experience through the storytelling. The plot was not completely predictable. This aided in a third act which sets up a tense final bout. Never did the action become CG overload, nor too bombastic. The film moves swiftly towards it's one goal, leaving out unneeded annoyances that are found in most SFX heavy action pieces of this type. There's also much humor involved with the repeating effect. Many of the laughs come unexpected and feel natural. This is what mindless summer blockbuster action flicks should be. You know, fun!
