A Story of Devastating Importance

'The Imitation Game' is the best period piece biopic I've seen in a while. It's certainly the best of this year. The story is more interesting than most other WWII dramas. A secretive plot to overturn the tides of war plays out behind the scenes. Cracking the Nazi's code is a previously classified endeavor. It became a deciding factor in the outcome of WWII. The immensely difficult task is presented as a tense race against time. This would be enough to make a good film, but the drama involved with the man behind the silent victory is the greater focus. The study of Alan Turing is both fascinating and heartbreaking. Through thee time periods we learn the facets of Turing; his genius, his social ineptness, and his hidden sadness. All three coincide simultaneous, reaching one climax with great emotional understanding and sympathy. Not only does he live a life of heartbreak, and is forced not to receive recognition for his services due to secrecy, but his incarceration years later is a great social injustice. Cumberbatch's terrific performance invigorates the devastating importance of these true events. 'The Imitation Game' is one film from 2014 that must be seen.
