Fascinating and Frightening

'The Nightmare' is a documentary of a different breed. It's an examination of an unexplained phenomena known as sleep paralysis - in which those involved have severe terrifying nightmares they are unable to wake from immediately. The people interviewed all share eerie similarities in their dream states. Their dreams may differ, but their experiences are all too common. All of the known and unknown facts surrounding this subject are fascinating. I was immediately hooked and on edge for the entire duration. The one thing that sets this doc apart is it's reenactments of all the participants stories. These sequences are actually terrifying to watch. They accurately represent those fears felt when dreaming. Watching them felt just like some nightmares I've had before, except worse in every way. I was more unnerved by this documentary than the vast majority of new horror films I've seen in the past few years. It honestly had me frozen solid with fear, just like individuals being interviewed. Sleeping with a light on may now be a temporary necessity.
