Urban Comedy of Character

'Tangerine' is a fresh modern take on an older form of comedy. It's not full of jokes and gags. The humor comes from the characters and their evolving relationships. It's entertaining to watch these eccentric people carry out a lifestyle that is rarely shown without heavy drama in film. And it's even more rare given that the two leads are transgender prostitutes. Though, the film isn't trying to be political or showy about that fact. It's entirely focused on it's own story, regardless of what kind of people populate it. Kitana and Mya (and everyone else) come off very engaging through their raw and vulgar nature. No matter the situations, they are always human. The whole movie has a tangible realism to it in the way it was shot and performed on the actual streets of L.A. without the use of usual filmmaking tools. The somber affects of the final confrontations resonate into an uncommonly sweet ending. It's a nice touch to a surprisingly enjoyable movie.
