The Choice (2016)

More Nicholas Sparks Nonsens, with Cop-Out Ending

'The Choice' is yet another (yearly) addition to the collection of films based on novels from writer Nicholas Sparks. I feel that everyone who is familiar with the brand will know exactly what to expect from this latest offering. I will contest that this round wasn't as painful or annoying to sit through as most of the others I've seen. That said, it is still undeniably dumb and cheesy. There exists no connection to the romance at hand due to the poor writing and lack of believability between the couple, despite the better efforts of the two leads. Many trite, predictable conveniences bring them together, while many questionable responses keep them apart for seemingly no reason. You can add infidelity and ever-changing desires to the couples motives as well. The dumb dialogue is also never-ending. Of course "love" (or this movie's version of it) prevails the upsets they brought on themselves. This leads us to the nature of the film's title in the third act; a life-threatening situation involving one of them causes the other to choose whether or not to respect their wishes. This could've been a really heavy hearted, tear spewing dramatic process if not for the continued cheese and complete lack of involvement I had gained from the start. I was willing to give a slightly higher score for the lessened amount of annoyances, but the ending drops the ball entirely. As to not spoil the events, I'll just say that the life-altering 'Choice' is averted entirely at the last second due to an absolute unrealistic occurrence in order to serve a typical "happy" ending. To that I call BULLS***.
