Minor Coen Brothers

'Hail, Caesar!' is minor Coen Brothers. We have a fully-loaded, star-studded cast making up an ensemble to accurately represent early 50's Hollywood. It's a clever send-up of moviemaking in that era; in front of, but mostly behind, the camera. If you know your Hollywood history, you are likely to understand more of the jokes. I enjoyed this aspect of the film greatly. Some memorable comedic moments had me laughing out loud, while others had me nodding in agreement with the sly wit. The comedy is very sporadic, though. The best scenes could almost be considered an assortment of sketches laid about a collective setting of time and place. We do have a main character with a goal, but everything around him feels like it's own little distraction. The flow of events are staggered throughout, as are the jokes. But when they hit, I was laughing a good deal. As a satire/recreation of classic Hollywood, it works well enough.
