The Bronze

I'd Give it a 'Bronze'

'The Bronze' is another of these "bad adult/instructor/authority" premise comedies pertaining to a foul mouthed, mean-spirited central character. It's not the best or the worst I've seen from this newly formed sub-genre of comedy. The storytelling is adequate here. Natural enlightenment of this hardened character progresses without completely erasing her rude core. She does learn from her mistakes and becomes a better version of herself without changing who she is, which I did like. However, it's never once made clear how she became the terrible individual she was at the beginning of the film, when the flashbacks of her youth contradict her current attitude. I'm lead to assume that her not winning the gold in the past is what started this, but it didn't seem that fact mattered given how she showed her true perseverance and love of the sport through placing high after continuing on from an injury. Her selfish, rude ways after the bravery shown made it hard for me to want to see her succeed. I love dark (especially black) comedy, but if the movie you are making has a traditional ark for your main character then certain things have to be compromised or they lead to conflicting ideals, as is the case here. Certain moments of dark humor had me laughing out loud, but they were sporadic and didn't vibe with light moments sandwiched between them. There's also a forced romantic interest setup for a quirky off-beat relationship. It felt awkward and unnecessary, to me. The jokes I found funny were sharp and on point, and the whole movie was entertaining enough for a watch.
