The Best 'Cut'

'Barbershop: The Next Cut' is that rare third part that bests it's predecessors. I had more laughs, and more involvement with the characters, than in the first two films. 'The Next Cut', gets the benefit of audiences having grown with these people over time. It's fun to be back with them and to see what new challenges they face. In this go-round, the main focus is on community support during times of escalating violence. The filmmakers deftly incorporate timely issues into the story. Conversations within the titular barbershop feel more organic and the characters raise many well spoken points on the various subject matters of today's culture. I really enjoyed these moments, and it felt as if there was much more emphasis on them than before. That said, we still get a couple of side plots that feel very 'sit-com' like. They weren't annoying, but definitely didn't feel needed. Anthony Anderson gets to have a meaningless aside again. Though, this time he's in the film much less. Not every joke or reference lands, either. I give the movie credit for focusing more on it's main themes.
