Held together by a strong surprising dramatic turn from Silverman, 'I Smile Back' offers some harsh reality to it's story of repeat addictions. Silverman's character loves being a mother and a wife, but she herself is anything but a model citizen. Her on again/off again multiple addictions stem from a bad past and history of mental problems. She carries the movie effortlessly with a layered performance. The movie itself just isn't worthy of her talent. It becomes hard to invest in her struggles when the story, and other characters, are only background to her inner turmoil, which never goes in a dramatically interesting direction.
