'Son of Saul' is an unflinching, more realistic portrayal of the events in Auschwitz from the perspective of one prisoner. He is tasked with leading herds of people into the gas chambers and disposing of their bodies multiple times per day. The realism is felt from the authenticity of the production, but much more so in the directing methods. The entire film is recorded in close proximity to the main character. We are hovering around him at all times, being at a face to face level with everyone involved. It's a deeply immersive tactic that brings about the true horrors of the situation. The emotional connection to our lead is seen through his personal quest to honor a dead loved one. It's an investment that takes time to appreciate. It all finally comes to fruition in the harsh finale.
