'Independence Day: Resurgence' might take the distinction of being the worst of all the unnecessary sequels to be released in recent times. The small germ of a passible story continuation exists in the two-decade recovery period after the events of the first 'Independence Day'. The world unites and utilizes alien technology for great benefit. That's the ONLY good idea in the entire movie. Everything else is a never-ending onslaught of gigantic hollow spectacle and absolute stupid nonsense - none of which generates an ounce of actual fun. The amount of retconning involved to will this sequel into being is staggering. Returning individuals (one from the dead?!) are altered for no good reason. The needlessly convoluted plot boils down to a succession of moronic choices made by the immensely dumb characters. I was left questioning every single choice as the film's intelligence level kept nosediving lower after starting at almost zero. All of the cast who was left alive at the end of the first film (except Will Smith) have returned and twice as many new characters are introduced on top of that. There are WAY too many people on screen to keep switching back and forth between. It's a task to keep up with where they are all at and what they are doing. Most of them don't even serve any purpose to the plot. A couple are just absolute terrible excuses for comic relief. Every single new character is so poorly introduced. Their scenes consist of downright awful exposition dialogue and cringe-worthy would be one-liners. There is not a single thing worth caring about. The execution of most scenes differ from one another. It seems the filmmakers want to present something big, brash, and fun, but also want us to take these insanely idiotic events seriously. That is an impossible feat. You can have something that is "dumb fun" and still have it be enjoyable or engaging. This is FAR from that. I was laughing audibly through the entire runtime at the sheer incompetence of it all. 'Independence Day: Resurgence' lacks any coherence, personality, and above all, entertainment. Pure nonsense!
