The long set-up is something straight out of 60's and 70's european horror and the torture and gore are like today's new exploitation movement. Not so much a 'scary' horror film as it is an endurance test. Though, a couple of moments do have some real tension and the third-act revenge switch and gore f/x are sure to please most horror fans.
