Pan's Labyrinth is a spanish drama/fantasy movie from the year 2006. It's about a girl who is forced to move withh her pregnant mother to a military camp in North Spain, there she creates a fairy tail world where she has to master three tasks to be a princess in an underground world...
This is not a real fantasy movie, this has actually more of drama in it, The drama part is set to be the subplot, but after an hour it becomes the main-plot. that is a bit confusing but is not that tragical. The script is, although that, very well written and shows of something about the Spanish civil war. The cinematography of this movie is just perfect, there is no doubt about that. The make-up and the art direction are outstanding. Well, fair enough they won the Oscar for that. The direction of GdT is perfect, he is one of the best directors of our time I think. The performances are solid and convincing.
But BE CAREFUL!
This is NOT a CGI festival like "LOTR" or "Harry Potter" this movie has a very little CGI and that's fine. The movie doesn't need that.
The thing I didn't like is, that the movie is at some parts a war drama and then a fairy tell. So it is hard to decide what rating it should get. I think "R" is fine.
On the whole, "Pan's Labyrinth" is a classic fantasy movie and is something everybody should have seen.
