Not as good as the first. I almost don't care because the art direction on these movies is *so good* -- the first 45 minutes were actually pretty great in terms of gorgeously-rendered 1970s details and some lovely camera work, along with nicely understated scares and solid performances. Then unfortunately everything went over-the-top and got silly. Some of the special effects were cool in principle but just the *wrong* aesthetic for this particular movie, completely out of joint with the rest of the film. Like Tim Burton showed up and randomly directed a couple of scenes. After that, the movie never quite recovered its mood, and there were way too many scenes that produced more giggles than scares.
