The Thunder I Heard Wasn't Laughter

I must have missed something (it was a very sparse crowd that night, and sometimes a comedy needs shared laughter). Certainly there were very funny segments, but as a whole it didn't work for me. The gratuitous profanity - more than I can remember from any recent movie - got really old. Tom Cruise and Robert Downey, Jr. were really good but Jack Black's talent was wasted in this movie. My wife would have given it a lower rating than I did.
Am I the only one who goes to Ben Stiller movies with really high expectations and leaves generally disappointed?
