Christmas Carol

"Carol" is a powerful drama set in the 1950s about a romance shared between two women. Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) and Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) first meet in a department store where the latter works. Soon a friendship blossoms and a tryst follows. This affair of an unconventional nature is further complicated by the fact that Carol is married to Harge Aird (Kyle Chandler), and they have a daughter.
"Carol" is accurate in its depiction of intrigue. The secret longings of retail clerks smitten by the attractive, wedding ring bearing, “taken” customers they serve is dead on. The rush of rendezvous flood the screen. The maddening jealousy as the result of betrayal, the hurt of unrequited love and the pain of rejection are all plainly visible. In fact it’s all there, flung up against a nostalgic backdrop filled with gold colored cigarette cases, phonographs, and vinyl. A sophisticated love story for those who don’t need an explanation for falling in love.
