A riveting adaptation of the bestselling novel by Alice Sebold, Peter Jackson takes bold steps in ascertaining honesty and fantasy at the same time, achieving wonderful attacks on ideas of death, departure, and guilt. Saoirse Ronan is brilliant in a follow-up acting job to "Atonement." Rachel Weisz and Susan Sarandon are equally so, offering profound female energy to this story of abusive men. Mark Wahlberg and Michael Imperioli offer masculine power to the strictly female-driven plot. And Stanley Tucci is chilling in his portrayal of one of the most evil villains in cinematic history.
