Alright: let me start by telling you my hopes for the film upon seeing the trailer, and then I'll go on to tell you what I got.
I was expecting a new, interesting take on the story, not simply a remake. A story that Wes Craven could not give justice back in the whenever the original was made, so they were going to take the whole being afraid of things in your dreams thing and make it actually scary. I wasn't expecting too much jumping out and scary moments, but I was expecting something with substance, with terrifying realities coming to life. A performance by Jackie Earle Haley was expected to blow my mind and the teenagers, I was hoping would be more or less nearer to Rob Zombie's "Halloween" films.
What I received was an overly-cliched, under-acted, under-scripted simple remake of the original with more CG effects and more grotesque death sequences that come faster than laughs in a Neil Simon comedy. I was thoroughly enrapt with the plot, but the overall feeling was lacking to my expectations. Jackie Earle Haley was mediocre at best, only recreating something, not really making it his own (which is what I was expecting after his stellar performances in "Little Children" and "Watchmen"). The plot didn't really pan out for me the way I wanted it to. It didn't excite me to see anything new, I wasn't touched, nor was I all that disgusted. Disappointing, but entertaining.
