RoboCop (2014) probably is as unnecessary as its detractors claim it to be but unlike a lot of similar films which are eager to dwell on the anticipated carnage, it's admirable for being so interested in the ideas it brings up with the premise. However, Joel Kinnaman struggles as the hero. There's times where he's very wooden and others when he's quite likeable. The supporting cast surrounding Kinnaman overwhelms him with the likes of Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Keaton, Michael K. Lewis, and even Abbie Cornish gives a better performance than Kinnaman. The effects and stylistic choices are fine enough but I was surprised by the lack of action which you'd think they'd cram as much as possible into the 105 minute running time.
