Assassinations! Intrigue! Unlikeable antiheroes!

This heavily fictionalized dramatization of Gandhi's assassination from his killer's perspective comes close to being pure melodrama at times. But ultimately, it does succeed in becoming an unnerving experience for viewers who already know how it ends but they still hope that the good guys make it in time to save the day. Horst Buchholz plays Natherum Godse, the Hindu fanatic who assassinated Gandhi in the warped belief that his death would end the sectarian violence affecting post-independence India. Godse here is impetuous, overzealous, and often grossly misogynistic; this would generally be a very strange choice for a movie protagonist but it fits the bleak atmosphere set up here. Gandhi himself is played by not by an actor but actually a former schoolteacher (who does a very good job btw).
