A thorn on the side of that 1969 hit western.

Those looking for a spirited continuation of the adventures of Butch Cassidy like was seen back in 1969 with the Newman-Redford movie are gonna be as sorely disappointed as I was. Instead, 'Blackthorn' is a character study with the outlaw duo's exploits serving as humorous flashbacks from the present and persistently gloomy story. Sam Shepard is great as an older Butch Cassidy living incognito in 1920s South America only to find himself on the run with a younger more arrogant criminal. The film is beautifully shot with some great scenic vistas of Bolivia's mountains, deserts, and jungles. There was a good entertaining story to be told but it's so underplayed and minimalist that it's as boring as I must sound explaining it in this review. What is worse is that the film has the nerve to tauntingly showcase a sense of fun and real entertainment value in the flashback sequences.
