Silly Southern Gothic melodrama. It aims to be GONE WITH THE WIND but it's only sporadically entertaining. Its best moments are when it rejects the 'Lost Cause' revisionism of that earlier epic. Sidney Poitier is no docile house negro and turns the tables on Clark Gable. The costumes look nice.
