Hugh Dancy and Jessica Alba play an interracial couple in 1930s Southeast Asia. It’s a more sensual and melodramatic version of the older Merchant-Ivory epics. It’s beautifully filmed and the cast is great. Jessica Alba is surprisingly good as the “Dorothy Lamour” standin. Unfortunately the story does lose its earnest charm in favor of cliched theatrics halfway through.
