A lengthy but intelligently written romantic drama about American soldiers and their experience of Japanese culture, namely the women. Marlon Brando's southern accent is a tad ridiculous but he's good as the previously ignorant pilot who's slowly drawn to a beautiful Japanese theater performer. Red Buttons in his film debut is very good as a lovelorn G.I. whose forbidden romance has tragic consequences. Sayonara works as both a lovingly photographed travelogue and a powerful diatribe against prejudice.
