Jon Amiel helms this lavish romantic drama about a Civil War widower (Foster) reunited with her husband (Gere) whom everyone thought died in the conflict. The performances are solid all around while the mood is respectable and old-fashioned. There is even time for retrospective commentary on the social attitudes of the day. Its earnestness is commendable but perhaps the romance was a little too tasteful.
