On the surface, GREEN BOOK is undeniably textbook Oscar bait. Period setting? Check. Topical premise? Check. Some corny Hollywood schmaltz sprinkled amidst the hardships and darker edges. Check.
And yet of all persons, it's one of the guys behind Shallow Hal who makes it work instead of induce eye-rolling and groaning. Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are both good in their respective parts. Often times, their dialogue together is quite funny.
