Colorful if conventional cash-in on a classic.

This spirited sequel to the Disney classic boasts some lively musical numbers and dazzling animated set-pieces just as in the original film. Thing is though, the movie plays out exactly like the original film. There's little in the way of surprise or innovation so the plot serves mainly as a nostalgia trip. The cast is still good though. Emily Blunt is a natural successor to Julie Andrews. Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer are solid as Jane and Michael Banks who are now grown-up. Lin-Manuel Miranda however is a poor substitute for Dick van Dyke while Colin Firth has a one-dimensional role as the stock evil banker. The best moments of the film are when it tries to make the returning characters mature instead of simply wallowing in nostaglia; a good message for viewers.
