One of the most baffling and frustrating Hollywood films to appear in ages. Richard Kelly has clearly used up as much goodwill ushered in by his cult film Donnie Darko as possible to make a passion project for the ages. Combing dystopian science fiction; political satire; big city politics; social commentary; and pornstars, SOUTHLAND TALES aims big and often misses. But it's never boring.
Some of the cast members are deliberately playing against type which is interesting. Dwayne Johnson plays an amnesiac wimp while Jon Lovitz plays a sinister racist cop (yes really). Wallace Shawn plays a maniacal inventor who seems like if Elon Musk really was a Bond villain.
There is ostensibly a plot about taking over..the.world I think by winning the senate election in Florida in an alternate 2008 taking place after (or is it during?) World War 3. Holy crap, this movie makes no sense.
But it's so weird it cannot be entirely dismissed.
