Crisp B&W cinematography and a solid performance by Robert Taylor cannot disguise this movie from being an obvious ripoff of The Maltese Falcon. There's a square jawed hero, a shifty femme fatale, a fat pompous villain, his dumb lackey, and an effete weasel thrown in the mix and they're all looking for a priceless artifact. It's less creative with the Holland setting and replaces the black bird with Nazi loot. The only major switch is that Taylor is playing a less scrupulous character than Sam Spade which could be interesting. But he quickly slips into GI Joe mode and it's just another 'good vs evil' setup.
