This horror/swashbuckler inspired by the Robert E. Howard novels actually starts out promising. It's rare when the prologue is the most interesting part of the film. The action has this great style, it's quite violent, and the movie finds an ideal atmosphere between Gothic and goofy. But that is quickly dashed for a routine redemption plot involving Puritans, witchcraft, and dodgy CGI monsters. James Purefoy shows the chops for an action lead very similar to Hugh Jackman but there's a long wait between the opening action scene and the next time he picks up a sword.
