Cartoonish but sometimes entertaining bible epic about a Greek sculptor (Newman) assigned to cast the Holy Grail in silver. They must also contend with a phony prophet (Palance) aided by the sculptor's childhood lover (Mayo) and a gang of fanatical assassins.
The production design is at once expensive and cheap looking. The costumes look good. But the matte paintings are so stylized they look fake instead of creative. Paul Newman reportedly hated his own film debut but he's okay. More of a poor man's Charlton Heston in this case but not terrible. Virginia Mayo and Jack Palance know what kind of movie they're in and are fun to watch.
