Robert Mitchum finds himself at the center of a complicated range war in this psychological western. The atmosphere is more akin to film noir than horse opera stuff. Robert Preston is a detestable villain whilst Phyllis Thaxter and Walter Brennan are good. But Barbara Bel Geddes is pretty wooden though. The plot is pretty twisty for a western and it’s interesting to see who’s really a good guy or noteworthy.
