Fascinating historical drama about the competition between famed inventors Thomas Edison (Cumberbatch) and George Westinghouse (Shannon). Also Nikola Tesla (Hoult) shows up as a brilliant if eccentric third-party visionary.
The movie moves at a surprisingly quick pace;it’s only ninety-five minutes. It’s the type of rivalry that I think would benefit from an extra half hour.
The performances are good across the board. Cumberbatch conveys the insufferable genius and showmanship of Edison well. On the other end, Michael Shannon is more noble and practical minded as the cautious Westinghouse. Matthew MacFayden has a fun part as banking tycoon J. P. Morgan.
