Sex, scandal, and gossip fuel this adaptation of the bestseller;probably made it a box office hit in its day too. The performances are all quite good even though the plot often meanders through a web of soap opera and melodrama. There remains a dark undercurrent that still packs a punch and likely shocked audiences back in 1957.
