Frank Capra's rank sentimentalism clashes with brash cynicism in this political drama set during the 1948 presidential election. It doesn't always jive. Spencer Tracy is the stalwart all-American well meaning politician. He's not bad but Katharine Hepburn's given much more to work with and gives a better performance. Hepburn competes with Angela Lansbury over whose movie it is;Lansbury plays a role very similar to her iconic turn as the villainous matriarch in The Manchurian Candidate. Van Johnson does add some levity as a sly political strategist.
