Billy Wilder’s dryly comedic tribute to the iconic sleuth benefits from a great performance by Robert Stephens.
He may be one of the best actors for the role of Sherlock Holmes. Colin Blakely has some fun moments as a slightly more irritable Doctor Watson. Christopher Lee is sorely underused as Mycroft Holmes;he’s a better fit someone like Moriarty instead.
The cinematography and imagery paints a lovely picture of Victorian London and the Scottish highlands in its third act. The central mystery is kind of interesting but it takes a while getting there.
