Imperfect western by John Huston that tries to tackle White-Indian relations head on, much like how John Ford did with The Searchers before. Except it is more overly dramatic than it wants to admit. Burt Lancaster isn't bad neither are veteran actors Lillian Gish and Charles Bickford. Audie Murphy is in a rare unpleasant role but he's solid. Audrey Hepburn has the daintiness and naivete down pat. But she has no chemistry with Lancaster. By the third act, the movie decides that it's a home invasion movie except with Indians and all the emphasis on the message kind of goes out the window.
