Dan Duryea plays a hack reporter who finds himself advocating for a black maid (Anderson) wrongly accused of murder. Howard de Silva is a memorably loathsome villain as the crime boss who serves as Duryea’s nemesis. The script deftly balances out themes of journalistic integrity and racial justice. Oddly prescient for a 1950 release. Though it is painfully obvious that Mary Anderson is white instead of black.
