Van Heflin plays a Civil War veteran who aspires to be a pastor. Except he faces opposition from townsfolk bitter that he fought on the Union side. His only ally is a feisty tomboy (Woodward) who tries to help him win over the skeptical community.
There's good work here by Heflin and Woodward, who's excellent in her film debut. Allison Hayes (Attack of the 50 ft Woman) has a nice role as an old flame of Heflin. There's an interesting setup for a conflict but yet the movie decides there must be a cartoon villain in the form of Raymond Burr. He's not bad but he's from a completely different movie.
