Meditative western about the encroachment of progress in the Old West.
Richard Widmark is well cast as a grizzled lawman unafraid to use his gun or his fists to settle a fight. But he faces opposition from his fellow townsfolk who want to join the 20th century and replace him with a more civilized police force. This battle of wills inevitably spills into bloodshed.
The script is a bit rough around the edges, and some subplots go nowhere, but the central conflict is engaging. There’s some good supporting work by genre regulars such as Dub Taylor or John Saxon.
