Stone-cold drama about hoodlums in a slum plotting a murder. Completely lacking in maudlin sentimentalism, it does not shy away from making its protagonist (played by Cassavates) a complete scumbag. James Whitmore is good as a social worker trying to help him go the straight and narrow path.
