Creepy and sometimes funny true-crime thriller

An impressive debut for Anna Kendrick in the director's chair. This stylish crime-thriller evokes the campiness and sleaziness of '70s game shows pretty well. Shaking things up is the absolutely horrifying notion that a given contestant could actually be a serial killer as was the case with actual murderer Rodney Alcala.
Daniel Zovatto plays Alcala extremely well. He's unsettling and offputting. But yet there is an audacity to his demeanor that remains compelling if not charismatic in some scenes. Anna Kendrick is as endearing as ever as Cheryl Bradshaw, another participant on the same tv show that Alcala went on during his brutal crime spree.
The tone is dark and moody but it still allows for some rare moments of levity to ease tension. It is not the next 'Zodiac' but still quite good.
