Cold War drama about westerners held captive by Chinese communists in a Shanghai hotel. The set-up has potential to be tense and claustrophobic. But it typically winds up as shallow melodrama. No surprise that Ruth Roman is solid as the female lead that audiences must figure out whether if she's good or bad. It does have its fair share of moments that are startlingly brutal. A lot of bystanders get killed, even a poor little dog.
