This film noir plays out more like a sappy melodrama. It is lifted up thanks to the cast. Barbara Stanwyck and Sterling Hayden make the most of their roles. Raymond Burr enjoys himself playing an unscrupulous policeman. The main issue is the story is very thin, like an episode from a tv show.
