There is a typical sequence to a series that denotes the second should be the action packed and "enough of this character development" piece. There is also a pattern to Woo films where the main hero yields two hand pistols and is an unstoppable kung-fu tank with high-tech gadgetry. One gets this here, but the first MI set an unusual precedence for a new spy style, and this sequel sets everything back to typical. Ethan goes from a "so bad I have to be good" spy to a "watch me do front wheel flips on my motorbike" he-man. Boring and to note it again: typical.
