Robert Downey Jr brings to Iron Man what Christian Bale brought to Batman Begins in that they have defined and have embodied the rolls. The movie has superior qualities to past Marvel franchise attempts that deserve note. Unlike the Daredevil and Elektra attrocities one will actually care and have fun with the main characters. Particularly with Stark as he both develops the Iron Man suit and as he and his personal assistant, Pepper, flirt with a love affair.
The special effects are also superior to past Marvel franchises that largely seem obsessed with poor CGI: The Hulk, The Hulk reboot, Daredevil, Elektra, Ghost Rider, Fantastic Four. The other benefit of the Iron Man beginning stages is that there are no super villians developed. Where is the Mandarin, Modok, the Living Laser, the Grey Gargoyle, Titanium Man, or Fin Fang Foom? The future is wide open and exciting from here on out for this introduction.
