The Cave consists of everything that could be considered a deepest, darkest fear. Being trapped underground, unknown menace, friend turning on friend, unknown thing brushing against you in the water, exciting unexplored territory turned hostile. It is too bad that within all these backdrops and themes the Cave cannot manage to amount to anything even slightly scary, tense, or interesting. Rather than developing a focus on the new spin for the vampire genre it offers, one is subjected to watching a group run around frantically giving tell-all monologues while they are picked off one by one by things crawling on the wall and lurking underwater. Other comparable films, most notably the Descent and Pitch Black, are vastly superior and accomplish everything this film set out to do but failed miserably at.
